Juvenile Law

INTRODUCTION

Juvenile Law

In Georgia, if you are 17 years of age you are considered an adult by the court, and you will be charged as an adult. Depending on the alleged crime, even if you are under 17 years of age, the District Attorney can advocate to charge you as an adult. You want to avoid this.

With our assistance and experience working in the juvenile courts in the Atlanta area, we are able to assist in keeping your child safe and protected. Children have rights just like adults do under the law, but the court proceedings are handled differently. An attorney, a parent, and the child will all be present and play active roles in the court hearings. You should immediately call a lawyer when you find out your child has been arrested and not speak with law enforcement about the case. Your child has the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.

Common Questions

The police have called me or my parents in for an interview, do I/we have to go?

No you do not. You should not talk to the police without your attorney present. Do not go to the police station or give any information without talking to your attorney or having your attorney present. The police can communicate with your attorney if they need to talk with you.

Will my juvenile criminal record affect me as an adult?

No, it will not. As long as you are charged in the Juvenile Court and the case is not moved up to the Superior Court, then your juvenile criminal history will disappear once you become an adult.
